Dear RCC member,

Welcome to a new year!

“Make each day your masterpiece!”

The Golf Course

December saw a total of 228mls on course; the dams are full and the course is in very good condition. With all the rain there has been no need to pull on our resource at Driefontein and our newly installed borehole has had the opportunity to rest.

2021, saw a total of 48 841 rounds for the year, split on average 50/50 between members and visitors.
Our greens have been receiving excellent comments and the latest ranking proves we are on the right track! Ruimsig Country Club has moved up 2 spots from 73 to 71, on South Africa’s Top 100 courses.

We thank Kleinboy and the Matko team for their dedication to our course, and their efficient service.
During the month of January, we completed a double hollow tining on the greens. The mound at 18 was also reduced to improve the view to the 18th Hole. We would like to thank Paul Heslop and Eddie Milne for the use of their equipment over this period.

To ensure our greens remain in top shape, we kindly request members and visitors’ assistance to fix any divots or pitch marks they come across. This goes a long way in assisting the golf maintenance teams.

We remind our members and guests that our marshals are there to monitor the pace of play and ensure that everyone enjoys the course in good time.
Golf carts are not allowed beyond the gate at the car wash, and staff have been instructed to ensure this gate remains closed. Remotes have been issued for those members with carts being stored at the Club. General cart usage unless discussed with Golf Operations, may not pass this gate, please assist by not asking staff to open the gate putting them in a position of going against the protocol.

As you pass over the bridge at #6, you have all seen the sign ‘ Bees About ’.

BeeBru was started by two brothers with a passion for conservation in 2018. It started as a hobby in the back garden and slowly grew as we fell in love with the meditative hum of 10 000 bees buzzing, less so for the stings.

The idea is to create a sustainable urban agriculture initiative with a focus on the conservation of the honey bee (apis mellifera). The decline of honey bees is mostly attributed to unsustainable farming practices that uses toxic chemicals to “protect” crops from pests. These chemicals have disastrous effects on indigenous pollinators who are so important in our food systems. It is estimated that a third of our food is reliant on honey bees for pollination, and the dwindling numbers will have serious affects on our production systems.

Urban areas tend to have significantly less pesticide loads, they are also regularly irrigated and have a wide variety of flowering plants. Areas like gardens, parks and golf courses are ideal zones for bees and cites are the next safe haven for bees.

We have teamed up with Ruimsig Golf Course in a symbiotic relationship where we are able to keep bees on the golf course to keep up the good work of pollinating all the surrounding flowers for up to 3,5km radius. In return they get safe, spacious housing and regular wellness checks.

If you get seasonal allergies then eating honey from the area you regularly visit will boost your immune system and lessen your pollen allergies.

The hives have recently been harvested and Ruimsig Country Club has received its first batch of honey. This will be available in the Halfway House, for R120 each.

Funds raised through the sale of this honey goes back into continuing their conservation efforts in ensuring the honey bees are well looked after. Stock is limited with each harvest, but will be available as harvesting from the hives is possible.

A couple of new initiatives will be launched over the coming weeks. One of which has already been the implementation of the knockout entry fees payable online. It has been great to see the enthusiasm to which you have logged – on. We look forward the camaraderie out on course as the battle begins. Good luck to all of you who have entered.

As this is new to our platforms, teething problems may be experienced, please let us know what your challenges may be, that way we can attend to your queries timeously and ensure that the process continues to run smoothly. Thank you for your support.

Our social and golf calendar for the year has been launched, and circulated. Please chat with Ziska, to find out more.

Look forward to seeing you out on course!

Megan
