RUIMSIG SENIORS GOLF MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2021
FROM THE CHAIRMAN (Seniors Group)
The spring rains have arrived and true to form have disrupted our planned Senior’s golf morning on Friday 1 October. Notwithstanding that disruption the rains are most welcome and we can look forward to the course taking on a fresh new look of green in the days to come. We have made a provisional booking for our Seniors Christmas Lunch for Thursday 18 November 2021. Please let Eddie or one of the committee members know if you will be attending.
COVID
While Covid is here to stay, the President, earlier this week, announced that we would be reverting to Lockdown level 1 with immediate effect. That is good news, in that it signifies a reduction in the number of new cases and a consequent drop in the positivity rate. That does not however mean that we should start to become complacent. Please continue to follow the recommended protocols, wear your mask, maintain social distancing and wash your hands regularly.
RUIMSIG GOLF COURSE
We welcome all the work that has been done on the bunkers. They are looking much better, even if we are not used to playing out of the new and improved soft sand. I suppose the rains will compact them a little making them more familiar. With the rains there is no doubt that we will be seeing changes on the course. One of those changes that will certainly affect all the seniors is that we will be getting less run on the fairways. As if getting old on its’ own isn’t doing that for us already. The greens too, will be softer and we appeal to all players to please repair their pitch marks and to repair any other pitch marks that they may find. The next thing we’ll probably be getting is complaints about the rough. But as I’ve said before about the bunkers, when there were complaints about the bunkers, if you don’t like the bunkers or the rough, don’t go there. Although slow play is a reality and continues to be a problem, I must say that the last few rounds I have played with different players and the fourballs have all been under four and a half hours. Please can we continue to speed up play and keep up with the fourball in front of you.
RYDER CUP
While the Ryder Cup is one of the most prestigious tournaments, the behaviour of some of the Americans, on the course and after their win was definitely not a good advert for golf. They were heavily criticised in the press and on social media for the way that they behaved. Let us hope that this is not the way golf is going.
TRIVIA/QUOTES
We all like to, or we did when we were younger, think that we are stronger and can outdrive the ladies. I wonder how many of us would have outdriven Georgia Hall of England who hit a 355 yard
(324 meter) drive on the 10 th hole in the HSBC Woman’s World Championship in 2018.
Seve Ballesteros “I’d like to see the fairways more narrow. Then everybody would have to play from the rough, not just me.”
Jack Lemon “If you think it’s hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball.”
Stay safe and enjoy your golf
